The Great Blogger Migration |
 |
By Diana Hsieh @ 5:00 PM
Blogger has decided -- for seemingly good reasons -- to stop allowing publication of blogs via FTP. Hence, I need to migrate NoodleFood and my other blogs to Google "custom domains." My blogs will still use their existing domain names (i.e. not blogspot.com), but they'll be at subdomains hosted by Google. NoodleFood, for example, will be at blog.dianahsieh.com.
You won't need to change your bookmarks or update your feed: everything will be redirected. However, you'll notice a change in the template, as now I'll be able to take advantage of Blogger's "Layouts," including its various cool widgets. Also, I'm going to switch the comments to some new system -- probably Disqus -- as that's something that I've been meaning to do for quite some time.
I've already done the transfer for some of my blogs, and that's gone well. However, I'm a bit worried about NoodleFood. I have over 4,000 (!!) posts to transfer, and some of my comments scripts will be partially broken.
So here's what's going to happen. I've already posted Sunday's posts. I'm going to work on the migration tonight (Saturday) and tomorrow (Sunday). I hope to have everything -- except perhaps the comments -- up and running on the new Google domain by Monday.
If something seems really broken, you can always e-mail me at diana@dianahsieh.com. But ... please don't do that until Monday.Labels: NoodleFood

My Policy on Announcements |
 |
By Diana Hsieh @ 4:00 PM
As a general matter, I'm happy to post announcements of events of interest to NoodleFood readers -- particularly lectures by Objectivist speakers, calls for activism, and the like. So suppose that you want me to promote your event. What should you do?
Most of all, you need to e-mail me a clear and simple announcement that I can simply quote in a blog post. Links and italics should be HTML-ified, but please don't use any other HTML. All the essential information should be included, but the announcement should be brief.
Also, I need at least 24 hours of lead-time before the announcement must be posted. I prefer a few days though. If time is too short, you can post your announcement in an open thread.
If you'd like other Objectivist bloggers to post the announcement, you can ask me to forward that HTML'ed text to OBloggers. If you want me to send the announcement to OActivists or FRODO, I'll need a text announcement too.
Yes, that's fussy of me. I just don't want to spend my limited blogging time constructing or formatting other people's announcements. However, if you make posting your announcement easy for me, I'll do what I can.Labels: Announcements, NoodleFood

Taking It Easy |
 |
By Diana Hsieh @ 2:00 PM
I've decided to take it somewhat easy for the rest of the week, so I won't post another podcast until Monday.
I'd hoped to post my next episode of Rationally Selfish Radio yesterday. However, the topic -- of the proper response to offers of government welfare -- is somewhat tricky, so I want to work out my views carefully. Plus, I have other pressing work. Tomorrow, I'm giving a short talk to Front Range Objectivism on Luck and Liberty, so I need to finish preparing for that. Also, I really want to finish up all the web updates that I started last week. Oh, and I'm trying to get to the bottom of some health problems too -- hypothyroidism, I think. That's taking some time, and I'm just not feeling as zesty for life as usual. So a break seems in order!
From what I hear, some of you could use some time to catch up. So get to it!
In the meantime, enjoy this picture of Conrad playing with a Boxer at the dog park this morning. They were doing more vertical jumping than I've ever seen Conrad do; the Boxer has all four paws off the ground in the picture. (Click for the full-sized version.)Labels: NoodleFood, Personal

Streams |
 |
By Diana Hsieh @ 10:00 AM
I'd planned to record and post my next podcast on design arguments for the existence of God today, but I've decided to delay that until Monday. (I won't have an Explore Atlas Shrugged podcast for Monday. We canceled the Front Range Objectivism Atlas Shrugged Reading Group meetings yesterday due to the snowstorm.)
In the meantime, I'm using the break to massively re-organize my blogging and podcasting output into distinctive streams, based on the nature of the content, with NoodleFood as the river that incorporates everything else. I need to separate out my future career -- that's the practical advice, which I aim to do on radio -- from my other projects and interests. More generally, the division into streams will allow me to market my output more effectively to various groups of people. People will be able to subscribe to all and only what interests them -- whether one or two things or the whole enchilada.
For now, I am creating three distinct streams:
- "Rationally Selfish Radio" will now designate just my "practical advice on living well" podcasting. I'll also blog on those issues a few times per week.
- My philosophy teaching files podcasts, as well as the podcasting that I plan to do on my dissertation, as well as any blogging on standard philosophical topics, will be collected under the banner of "PhiloFiles."
- The podcasts and discussion questions for Explore Atlas Shrugged, as well as future podcasts and resources for studying Ayn Rand's fiction and philosophy, will continue to be gathered at Explore Ayn Rand.
As I mentioned, NoodleFood will be the river into which all of these streams feed. It will also include other side-interests of mine, like paleo-ish eating, political activism, and funny cat videos. So everything that appears in any of the above streams will be reproduced on NoodleFood. All of my podcasts -- on any and all topics -- will be gathered into a single "NoodleCast" feed.
So if you want everything, you just need to stick with NoodleFood. Also, I should be able to transfer everyone now subscribed to current "Rationally Selfish Radio" podcast feed to the new NoodleCast feed, so you'll continue to get everything. Basically, I want the transition to be totally seamless for all of my existing followers. If not -- if something seems amiss on Monday, when everything should be settled -- please just drop me an e-mail.
Also, I should mention that this update will fix the problem of the wrong dates on podcasts in iTunes that resulted in them being listed out-of-order. (The otherwise excellent Feedburner was the cause of the problem, but I can side-step it by using a nice little program called Feeder to create my podcast feeds, rather than using Blogger.)Labels: Announcements, NoodleFood

Paring Down the NoodleFoodlers |
 |
By Diana Hsieh @ 5:00 AM
As you might have noticed, I updated NoodleFood's template earlier this week. I changed some font and other style settings. I added and removed some links. I still haven't updated my blogroll though. (I'll get to that eventually, I swear!)
I've also pared down the NoodleFoodlers to just Paul, Greg, and me. We've not had any kind of falling out. Rather, given my future career plans, NoodleFood needs to become my own blog again, as opposed to a group blog. As my better half, Paul will remain on NoodleFood permanently. Given Greg's excellent contributions over the years, including during my dissertation crunch, I just couldn't bring myself to give him the boot. Plus, I definitely want him to continue his regular updates on The Objectivism Seminar. However, for the sake of PR, I'll probably demote him to "Guest Blogger" soon, likely when I overhaul the whole of DianaHsieh.com.
I must say, that overhaul is long overdue. For definitive proof, look at the first line in the "about me" on the main page: "I am a graduate student in philosophy at the University of Colorado at Boulder in the process of finishing up my coursework." Ha! That's about two and a half years old!Labels: NoodleFood

The John Galt League |
 |
By Diana Hsieh @ 4:01 PM
Much to my delight, Kevin McAllister has agreed to act as the commissioner for a fantasy football league for fans of NoodleFood. Hence, the "John Galt League" has been resurrected!
You need not be an Objectivist to join the league, but you should be a fan of NoodleFood, not hostile to me and mine. Kevin has told me that "If Immanuel Kant tries to join, I'll reject him." (So there, Manny!)
The league will be run on ESPN.com. When I managed the John Galt League two years ago, my greatest frustration was that communication between teams was difficult. So I often felt like I was playing with a bunch of strangers, not friends and acquaintances. To alleviate that problem, I've created a mailing list for the league on Google Groups. That way, we can trash talk at will discuss some of the interesting epistemic and ethical dimensions of the game over the course of the season.
If you want to join the league, you need to sign up with the Google Group. Then we'll all sign up on ESPN, then Kevin will schedule a draft. If you have any questions or problems, please contact Kevin McAllister at kevin@mcallister.ws.
Space is very limited, so sign up now if you want to join.
Thank you, Kevin!Labels: Football, NoodleFood

NoodleFood Twitter Feed |
 |
By Diana Hsieh @ 2:01 PM
I've created a Twitter feed for NoodleFood posts under the name @NoodleFood. Notably, that new account won't be used for anything other than the blog feed. I don't plan to follow anyone from it. I'll continue to use @DianaHsieh for my real tweets and follows. Of course, I'll likely re-tweet some of my favorite blog posts via @DianaHsieh, but if you want the whole lasagna, follow @NoodleFood.
Wow, I just realized that nothing about that paragraph would have made the slightest bit of sense to me ten years ago, before the rise of blogs, let alone the creation of Twitter. If you're baffled, please just go on your merry way. It's only useful information for people on Twitter.Labels: NoodleFood

Server Problems |
 |
By Diana Hsieh @ 1:01 PM
As I mentioned in Saturday's post, I'm suffering from server problems related to file permissions. Some upgrade to the kernel created security problems, so my internet host turned off chmod access. That wouldn't be so terrible, except that any new file uploaded to the server is now created with permissions of 600 (read and write only for the owner) rather than with 644 (read for all, write only for the owner). I can't change the permissions manually, neither through the shell nor with ftp.
That means that individual pages for new blog posts are not viewable on the web; you'll see an "Error 403: Access Forbidden" page instead.
That sucks hard, particularly because my internet host has only offered vague promises about when the problem will be fixed. Hopefully, some work-around will be hit upon soon, as the current set-up means that all my web sites are either frozen or broken.
In the meantime, you can read posts from the the main NoodleFood page and view and post comments using the "New Page" link at the bottom of the post.
Update: My internet host just finally told me a method by which I can chmod the files manually. That will be a pain, and I can't guarantee that I'll be able to do it pronto, but at least it's something.Labels: NoodleFood

FYI on Announcements |
 |
By Diana Hsieh @ 12:01 AM
I'm willing to post announcements of any significant event -- such as a lecture or conference -- that is likely to be of interest to the bulk of my readers, i.e. Objectivists, fans of Ayn Rand, advocates of free markets, and the like.
However, please don't just ask me to announce the thing in question. Instead, send me the actual text of an announcement that I can simply quote in my blog post, preferably with HTML links already properly formatted. (Please, no HTML e-mail: use plain text.) That will make me love you for your thoughtfulness and consideration of my time. It will also ensure that your announcement is posted in a timely fashion, rather than languishing in my "to blog" folder.
Basically, I'm more than happy to help, but please don't make such help a burden to me. This principle applies whether I'm crushed by dissertation work or not: I don't want to have to do your work for you in order to do you a favor.
(Yeah, I'm feeling crabby. Get over it.)Labels: NoodleFood

2008 Statistics |
 |
By Diana Hsieh @ 9:48 AM
NoodleFood changed direction a bit in the middle of 2008. I sought to draw in a wider audience, to increase traffic, to post more posts each day, and to focus on activism, and to bring on more bloggers. I've done all that, and I'm very pleased with the results, as represented by the upward trend in total blog traffic (as recorded by SiteMeter) starting in June. See for yourself:

That traffic doesn't count RSS readers. (That's considerable, I think.) I estimate that NoodleFood has about 1000 to 1500 daily readers via the web, plus some unknown number of readers via RSS. That's pretty damn good, but I'd definitely like NoodleFood to do even better. And I think it can.
My goals for 2009 include (1) writing more substantive political and ethical commentary, (2) further increasing traffic to 100,000 visitors per month, and (3) adding a weekly podcast. Any other suggestions?Labels: NoodleFood

Good Deeds |
 |
By Diana Hsieh @ 11:58 PM
Here at NoodleFood, we like to use our powers for good.
I'm now blogging regularly at Politics without God about secular government, as is Paul. Paul also continues to blog regularly at We Stand FIRM about free market medicine. Some of the posts from those two blogs have been and will be cross-posted to NoodleFood, most posts have not been and will not be. However, many would be of interest to NoodleFood readers. So from now on, I'll post a quick list of the week's posts from each blog each Sunday, exactly like this:
Politics without God: We Stand FIRM:
- Monday, July 14, 2008: Paula Hall: Don't Become A Primary Care Physician by Paul Hsieh, MD
- Tuesday, July 15, 2008: Father of Canadian Health System Says It's In "Crisis" by Paul Hsieh, MD
- Wednesday, July 16, 2008: Peikoff Video: Health Care Is Not A Right by Paul Hsieh, MD
- Thursday, July 17, 2008: More On Massachusetts Mandates Mess by Paul Hsieh, MD
- Friday, July 18, 2008: Commonwealth Fund At It Again by Paul Hsieh, MD
Enjoy!Labels: Coalition for Secular Government, Health Care, NoodleFood

NoodleCaboodle |
 |
By Diana Hsieh @ 12:57 PM
Introducing... the NoodleCaboodle! NoodleCaboodle is a behind-the-scenes mailing list for friends of this blog. Anyone interested in and friendly to NoodleFood is welcome to subscribe, even if not always in agreement with the views of the NoodleFoodlers. The list is hosted by Google Groups, so a subscription will require the creation of an account with Google, as well as my (mostly perfunctory) approval. The list is unmoderated, but I will remove trolls and other brats from it.
As I mentioned earlier, the list is open to discussions of almost any kind. For example, NoodleFoodlers might post links to interesting articles that may or may not be blogged on NoodleFood, alerts to thoughtful responses to NoodleFood posts around the blogosphere, and so on. We might ask for advice on changes to the form or substance of NoodleFood. In addition, any subscriber would be welcome to post links to interesting articles, ask questions, raise objections, and the like. Hopefully, some of that material will become fodder for NoodleFood posts.
If you wish to subscribe, you can do so here.
The NoodleCaboodle list is definitely an experimental venture for me. It may thrive, or it may flop. I'm rationally optimistic, however. I'm also willing to allow it to go where it will, based on the interests of subscribers.
Also, thank you to everyone who suggested a name in my original post on this idea. I'll have to use Gus' delightfully devious suggestion of "The Illuminoodli" for some secret cabal in the future. But of course, only those in the cabal will know for certain that it exists.Labels: NoodleFood

NoodleFood SuperFriends! |
 |
By Diana Hsieh @ 6:10 PM
I would like to create a mailing list -- likely through Google Groups -- for "friends of NoodleFood." Anyone interested in and friendly to NoodleFood would be welcome to subscribe, even if not always in agreement with our views, Objectivist and otherwise. (In other words, unlike my OList.com mailing lists, I'd definitely not restrict membership to Objectivists. However, as usual, I would remove annoying people from the list.)
The list would be open to discussions of almost any kind. For example, I might post links to interesting articles that I may or may not have time to blog for NoodleFood. I might post alerts to good responses to NoodleFood posts found around the blogosphere. I might post snarky comments about insane responses to NoodleFood posts (e.g. here and here). I might ask for advice on changes to NoodleFood. Subscribers would be welcome to post links to interesting articles, ask questions, raise objections, and the like. I hope that some of that material will become fodder for a NoodleFood posts, whether written by me or another NoodleFoodler.
However, I have a problem: I need a properly whimsical name. NoodleFood specializes in such names. Even apart from the title of the blog, the bloggers are "NoodleFoodlers" and the commenters are "NoodleFoodleDoodlers." So what would be a fitting name for a mailing list for people friendly to NoodleFood be called?Labels: NoodleFood

Blogger Problems |
 |
By Diana Hsieh @ 6:48 PM
*grumble*
I've been having terrible problems with Blogger lately, but particularly today. As a result, some of my comment scripts aren't working correctly. Those scripts depend on information in the files that Blogger produces, but Blogger hasn't been reliably producing the files with that information. Plus, Blogger's upload of the files to my server has been hit-or-miss -- and mostly miss.
I hope that the problems will be wholly sorted out in the next few days. In the meantime, I'll create work-arounds as best I can. However, you'll just have to be patient, as even those are difficult to implement due to Blogger's problems.
Hopefully, this post will publish in some reasonable amount of time. I won't hold my breath, though!Labels: NoodleFood

New NoodleFoodler: Gina Liggett |
 |
By Diana Hsieh @ 9:00 AM
I'm delighted to announce the addition of yet another guest blogger to the illustrious ranks of NoodleFood: Gina Liggett.
Gina Liggett is a nurse and freelance writer in Denver, Colorado. She's studied Objectivism for more than 20 years and contributes to Freedom and Individual Rights in Medicine (FIRM) and Front Range Objectivism. In addition to philosophy, she's interested in religion, politics, individual rights, international affairs, health care policy, science, and fitness. She dances ballet, jazz, and salsa, plays golf, and speaks French and Spanish. Gina can be reached at GLiggett@comcast.net. I've been very impressed with Gina's contributions to FIRM over the past year and a half. She stepped up to the plate, in a big way. I hope to contribute to her opposition to the proposed "personhood" amendment to the Colorado Constitution. (That's the subject of her first post, to be published shortly.) And, of course, I'm enthused to see what she writes for NoodleFood!Labels: NoodleFood

Perceptual Self-Evidence |
 |
By Diana Hsieh @ 10:30 PM
As should be perceptually self-evident to anyone viewing this web site, I've updated the template. If you have any problems or complaints, please let me know via e-mail or in the comments.
It's change all-around here at NoodleFood!
Update: I've now integrated the comments into the post pages, as well as added the number of comments for each post to the main page. All the old links to pages and comments are still good, however. Everything seeming to be working well, although Blogger needs to republish the whole blog for everything to work right. That's done by now, I hope.
Update #2: Nope, still fighting with Blogger to republish the whole blog. In the meantime, comments have been moved to each post page and the number of comments for each post now appears with each post.Labels: NoodleFood

Shifting Noodles |
 |
By Diana Hsieh @ 5:08 PM
For some time now, NoodleFood has presumed an audience familiar with and/or in agreement with Ayn Rand's philosophy of Objectivism in too many posts. I've grown unhappy with that, as that kind of blogging isn't consistent with my my goals for activism. So as of now, the focus of NoodleFood will shift somewhat. Except on rare occasion, posts will presume a general audience, as that's the audience I want to attract, interest, and persuade. Of course, I still expect the blog to be of interest to Objectivists. Also, not all posts will be philosophical: you'll get your usual doses of cool oddities and funny cat videos.
I want to publicly mention this change for a few reasons. (1) I want to publicly commit to it, so that my friends can gently chastise me if I slip back into my old ways. (2) Commenters might consider offering addenda or raising questions with the goal of making some point more clear or persuasive to a general audience. And (3) the kinds of exchanges in the comments might well change, as more people unfamiliar with Objectivism read and comment on posts. Be gentle and friendly with honest folks, as that's an opportunity to hone your argumentation skills.
So... you may now resume your regularly scheduled web surfing.Labels: NoodleFood

Paula Hall Joins NoodleFood |
 |
By Diana Hsieh @ 7:28 PM
I'm delighted to announce that Paula Hall will be joining the illustrious ranks of the NoodleFoodlers as a guest blogger for the next month or two, and perhaps more permanently after that. Some of you might remember her now-defunct blog, Ms. Think. More recently, she raised an excellent question on Nuisance and Pornography, then participated in the ensuing discussion in the comments. Here's how she describes herself:
I am non-practicing lawyer living in Brookline, Massachusetts with her husband, teenaged son, and Goldendoodle puppy. After living la vie bohème in NYC for a few years I finally went to school, where I majored in ethics and social and political philosophy at U.Mass/Boston and then got a J.D. from Harvard Law. To pay the bills I do market R & D at a high-tech firm that helps companies manage their legal compliance risks. For over 20 years I have been studying and thinking about Objectivism, with an emphasis on ethics, epistemology, economics, and lately, philosophy of law. I refuel by teaching myself piano -- right now, I'm tackling Chopin's Aeolian Harp Étude Op. 25, No. 1 in A-flat Major. I'm hugely enthused to read her contributions to NoodleFood.
Welcome aboard, Paula!Labels: NoodleFood

More NoodleFoodlers? |
 |
By Diana Hsieh @ 8:09 AM
I'm interested in adding another blogger or two to NoodleFood. I'm looking for someone with a solid grasp of Objectivism, careful habits of thought, thoroughgoing commitments to honesty and justice, and a good sense of fun. I'll probably need to know any potential NoodleFoodler already, at least from some internet writings. (Or, the person can be a "guest blogger" for a month or so.)
Any potential NoodleFoodler should be willing to write at least a few posts per month. The posts need not be deeply philosophical, but they should be informative, thought-provoking, and/or entertaining. In general, posts should be commentaries of less than 1000 words, not long essays. Even shorter posts are fine.
NoodleFood is wholly my blog, to which some other fine folks contribute. I definitely value the input of my fellow bloggers, but I am the final authority in all Noodle-ish matters. So I act as the editor of the blog: posts are published by me only after I review them. In case of serious disagreement, I retain the right to refuse to publish a post. However, that's never happened. Usually, disagreements are minor. In such cases, I discuss the problem with the author before posting, in the hope of making some mutually satisfactory changes. If no such agreement can be reached, I might express my own views in a note at the bottom of the post or in the comments.
Any new blogger must be approved by all existing NoodleFoodlers.
If you're interested, please drop me an e-mail with a link to some relevant writings and/or a sample post or two, plus any other relevant information.
Thanks!Labels: NoodleFood
