If you go to the trouble of running out to the convenience store to buy the item, you haven't received the quid pro quo, viz, "convenience," for which you paid the ridiculously high price. Moreover, even on Cohen's theory, the hotel hasn't been deprived of anything. It charged you for the privilege of leaving your room without replacing the food you ate--as reflected by the fact that the trade does not happen, and your account is not charged, until the mini-bar restocker shows up in your room--not for the "privilege" of eating a comestible only to go to the effort of replacing it. Just because you replaced it after you consumed it, matters not. As far as the hotel is concerned, it does not and should not be concerned with the order the events took place. As far as it is concerned, you never ate the item in the mini-bar at all, you just went to the convenience store and bought the exact same item and ate it. | ||
