Blood Pressure
By Diana Hsieh @ 3:56 PM

I was at my doctor's office not long ago to address a long-neglected problem. My blood pressure -- which had risen to around 130/90 for some time before my change in diet -- was 94/72. My doctor said that blood pressure in that low range is not a problem unless a person is suffering from symptoms like dizziness. Since I'm suffering no such symptoms: Hooray!

Diana, are you taking blood pressure medicines, or is this solely because of your diet?

That's great news! From borderline hypertension to almost fainting. heh. I can experience dizziness from a low resting heart rate (50-ish), due to the running. I have to watch getting up after being in a squat or sitting relaxed for a long time. I once fainted during an unnecessarily detailed personal medical story :)

I don't know about you, but my BP used to be 10-15 pts higher at the doctor's office because I got nervous about it. I finally bought a home meter and found out my BP is fine.

BTW it's the same with a low-fat diet or a moderate-fat/low-carb diet (my current regimen).

I'm not on any meds that affect blood pressure. It's all diet and the resulting weight loss.

I've never been nervous in medical offices, or so I thought until I pulled a 130 over 84 at a Kaiser Permanente in California in May, in the emergency room getting treatment for an ear infection. That's the highest I've ever seen, rather surprising since blood pressure tends to run on the low side in my family.

Today, again in an emergency room for something else, I saw 104 over 74.

The only difference: I drove through California traffic for the first visit, but I live in Nevada now. What a difference!
