Back to the Political Future

By Diana Hsieh @ 1:40 PM

When I first saw the following political cartoon, courtesy of the Chicago Tribune...

... it seemed a bit dated in its style. Yet the message was dead-on.

...

...

...

Then I realized that it was published in 1934. Wow.

I like the Trotsky figure in the lower left.

I love the old political cartoons.

The sad aspect is how much that was taken for granted has been lost, both in knowledge and common sense.

I object to euphemisms like "Planned Economy" or "Central Planning."
Planning is a private mental operation using reason that is good.
But central planning isn't good planning at all because it's cut off from reality because it leaves out individual minds.
Morally "central planning" evades the role of force in the government.
If anyone uses it, I change it to something more authoritarian and dictatorial-sounding like "central command" or "controlled economy."
There may be better terms. Can you think of any?

The Tribune had a history of good editorial cartoonists. Sadly, they never replaced Jeff MacNelly after his death in 2000. MacNelly was one of the best ever. However, Michael Ramirez at Investors Business Daily has put out some good cartoons (albeit with a more traditionally conservative bent than even MacNelly). I see a lot of MacNelly's influence in Ramirez.
