Walking Cultural Activism: A Personal Relationship

By Greg Perkins @ 3:12 PM

Tammy and I thought it would be great to produce a series of T-shirt designs for those occasions when it is appropriate to wear our ideas on our sleeves. Bonus points if they aren't just provocative but actually spark some good engagement!

Here's a design that offers a simple, wry response to the oddly-fashionable notion that Christianity isn't a religion (no sir, it's a relationship with Jesus): I have a personal relationship with reality.

You can't tell at that resolution, but the font sports a distressed typewriter look, and there is a subtle emphasis on the word 'reality'. Here's a closer look:

(Just click through to BoltOfReason.Com to check out all the available styles and colors. We of course love suggestions and requests -- we're already working on a lot of fun ideas, and if you are the first to hit us with a new one that we use in a future shirt design, you'll get one for free!)

Hi Greg,

I've had ideas about slogans that can spin off common ones used by the Left. They usually involve substituting freedom for their terms -- often "peace".

"No Justice, No Peace" = "No Freedom, No Peace" or "No Freedom, No Peace OR Justice"

"Imagine Freedom" = "Imagine Freedom"

"War is Not Moderate" = "Freedom is Not Moderate"

"Peace is Patriotic" = "Freedom is Patriotic"

Other adaptations:

"Got Freedom?"
"Will Work for Freedom"
"Celebrate Freedom"

The point of these is that I hardly ever seen the word "freedom" in Leftist propaganda -- likely for good reason. Even though most people have no idea what freedom is exactly, it's a good idea to push it back into people's consciousness. The Left counts on its absence to erode it without being called on it.

Another one just popped into my head:

"Left Wing, Right Wing, Same Vulture"

Jim,

I've been doodling a cartoon to that effect with the caption, "Neither wing thank you, I'm American". The graphic is an eagle in Albanian style (two heads), with a sickle in one claw and a fasces with a cross on top in the other; with the two heads flustered and obviously fighting.

Jim, I think I'd buy that. Dan, I'd like to see yours. Could it work as a T-shirt graphic?

C Andrew,

I'm not sure if it would work. It would be quite a bit to take in just in passing. If it ever passes beyond the doodle stage, I'll share it.

Jim -

Interestingly, one word that you do see a lot in leftist propaganda is "liberation"--typically in some context that implies liberation from all standards, even from the law of identity.

I've been saying for a few years that I have a close personal relationship with the first hundred integers. Though that's less a philosophical comment than a personal one on how my brain works.

One occurred to me this morning: "How about trying *freedom* for a *change*?" Sort of a riff on the whole 'Obama/change/new ideas' thing that's floating around.

Just in case there's a shortage of idiocy on this comments page, I'll mention two tee shirts that I found entertaining, both warn by female students:

(1) Have you hugged this tee shirt today?

(2) Objects under this shirt are larger than they appear.

Here's a more intelligent one:

(3) Eve was framed.
