Real Estate
By Diana Hsieh @ 6:05 AM PermaLink

A Canadian realtor offers a damn funny tour through terrible real estate photos. (His commentary is spoken, so turn on your sound.)

I'm not sure which is my favorite: the view of the room from the perspective of the cat or the bedroom littered with dirty clothes. Probably the latter. (Via Amy Mossoff.)

I like the old guy sitting on the couch: "I'm wondering if the seller would be willing throw in the old man and his couch for their asking price? I don't have a grandpa and I think he adds charm to the place."

I spent *hours* fretting over the photos when I sold my home, I can't imagine providing such pictures.

Although other images are more straight-up funny, I was amused by the vapidity of the stacked washer & dryer right beside the toilet, with nothing else showing.

It, in its astonishing uselessness, serves well as an example of how to deal with the various images the web page offers.

1. Okay, so the owner moves out, and the laundry stack goes; now we have a picture of a wall and a toilet tank. I should buy that? Impressive!
2. Wait, why does the washing machine have to be beside the potty... do you guys have bowel problems? Do I want to buy your house? What is IN those carpets?
3. Is this the basement? Why not show the floor too? Is there something nasty there we should know about, that you're not telling us?

Wait, is GeekPress taking over Noodlefood???

On the photography forums I frequent, there are a lot of discussions about people who balk at the prices for wedding photography and figure they can get the same quality if they just got Uncle Fred to do it with his digicam. These shots are the real estate equivalents of the results they usually get. Imagine your wedding shot like this!

Another reason these are so bad is how tightly cropped they are. Most consumer digital cameras lack the wider angles needed to capture enough of tight interior spaces. I have a 12-24mm Sigma zoom on a Canon 5D, and at 12mm that setup makes broom closets look cavernous.
