Preventing Crime with Gun Free Zones
By Paul Hsieh @ 5:51 PM PermaLink

Here's an extremely simple solution to our crime problems - the "Gun Free Zone"!

I wonder why no one's thought of this before?

On a more serious note, I've never felt safe in a "gun free zone" because I know I'm just a sitting duck for any criminal willing to disregard the law.

On the other hand, I've never felt safer than when I'm browsing at our local gun store, because I know that no criminal in his right mind would dare start any kind of trouble in place where there are dozens of trained, armed, law-abiding citizens ready and willing to protect themselves from bad guys. Similarly, I sleep very soundly at our autumn local Objectivist camp-outs, where most of us bring some sort of firearm to protect ourselves against four-legged or two-legged predators...

I really like these, too. I had always thought these things were kind of obvious until I moved to Chicago. These would make most Chicago area resident's heads explode.

When friends (from Chicago, where else?) came out to visit yet another friend of mine who lives nearby, and they wanted to go hiking, my local friend grabbed a .22 rifle so he could shoot porcupines if he found them (they are incredibly destructive of trees). The wife from Chicago started to go ballistic; my local friend's wife assured her that her husband was very safe with firearms. What none of them knew was that I discreetly went to my car and grabbed my 10mm, tucking it under my jacket, just in case we ran into something a bit bigger than a porcupine. (You can take on small bears with a full-house 10mm--barely. But I was more worried about mountain lions.)

I don't think the Chicagoans ever knew; I did let my local friends know after the fact (and yes, I am concealed-carry legal here).

Peace of mind all around. After all what you don't know can't possibly exist (end sarcasm).

As for feeling save in a gun shop, a few years ago in Somerville, MA, someone tried to hold up a Dunkin' Donuts that had police from 3 towns in it.

"No criminal in his right mind"? How often are criminals in their right mind? Criminals generally aren't too bright.

Cop: You can't fool us. We know about those four banks you robbed.

Criminal: That's a lie!!! I only robbed three banks!

Hmmm... I'm guessing that would be Puma concolor and Homo non-sapiens, respectively. lol

Talking about gun control, a poster I like says "Gun control that works: The Weaver Stance" (you can get it at http://weaverstance.com)

I dreamt the other night that I was holed up in a cabin, fighting off bears who were also armed with guns.

Seriously though, weapon laws are so strict here in the UK, one has to learn some sort of unarmed self-defence.

I don't understand why people fail to grasp that with defense, either personal or international, parity or better is the only safe standard.

Texas school allows teachers to carry guns into class: A school district in Texas is to allow teachers and staff to carry guns into the classroom in what is thought to be a national first.

"When the federal government started making schools gun-free zones, that's when all of these shootings started. Why would you put it out there that a group of people can't defend themselves?"

Is Texas a microcosm of conservatism, or what? On the one hand they are pro-self-defense, and on the other hand they cough up a lousy mystical know-nothing like GW.
