Amendment 48 Is Anti-Life
By Diana Hsieh @ 1:12 AM
I'm delighted to announce that the Coalition for Secular Government has just published its first issue paper:
Amendment 48 Is Anti-Life: Why It Matters That a Fertilized Egg Is Not a Person
by Ari Armstrong and Diana HsiehColorado's Amendment 48 -- the proposed constitutional amendment that would grant full legal rights to fertilized eggs -- would usher in disastrous government controls on abortion, birth control, and in vitro fertilization. It would do so by grossly violating individual rights -- in the name of the faith-based fiction that a fertilized egg is equal to a born infant. Here's the press release:

AMENDMENT 48 IS ANTI-LIFE, NEW PAPER SHOWS
"Amendment 48, the ballot measure that would define a fertilized egg as a person with full legal rights in the Colorado constitution, is profoundly anti-life," said Diana Hsieh, founder of the Coalition for Secular Government.
"It would obliterate basic reproductive rights in Colorado based solely on the faith-based fiction that a fertilized egg is the moral equal of a born infant. The biological facts show just the opposite: that only the pregnant woman, and then the born infant, are persons with rights," Hsieh said.
"Amendment 48 Is Anti-Life," written by Ari Armstrong and Diana Hsieh and published by the Coalition for Secular Government, shows that the ballot measure is hostile to human life in myriad ways:
* Given existing criminal statues, Amendment 48 would subject women and their doctors to life in prison or the death penalty for abortions, even in cases of rape, incest, and fetal deformity.
* It would prevent doctors from properly treating non-viable ectopic pregnancy until the woman's life and health was in serious danger, thereby causing needless deaths.
* It would force thousands of women each year to bear unwanted children, whatever the cost to their own lives and happiness.
* The measure would ban popular and effective forms of birth control, including the birth-control pill, thereby increasing unwanted pregnancies.
* It would outlaw the fertility treatments responsible for the birth of hundreds of Colorado babies to eager parents each year.
"The voters of Colorado must protect their reproductive rights against this dangerous assault. They must vote 'NO' on Amendment 48," Hsieh said. Labels: Abortion, Coalition for Secular Government, Religion

This is an excellent paper. Amendment 48 will be defeated, and we are going to help ensure that it will be SOUNDLY defeated. The misnamed group, "Colorado for Equal Rights," (who got the amendment on the ballot) admits that they are unconcerned with such legal and medical issues pertaining to their amendment because they view the wording as nothing more than a simple statement. They gave ZERO thought to the implications of what they are doing, and frankly, they don't give a damn. This is god's work they are doing, by their own admission. (Hoping to get major brownie points with god, I imagine).
Their entire foundation is anti-intellectual, totally religious-based and about as profoundly anti-life as you can get. They must be defeated and they WILL be defeated. Let's show anyone else in other states that America will not retreat into the dark ages.

Gina aren't you being charitable by saying they gave zero thought to the implications? If they did admit this, I would take it as cover for their real thought process which they know would be perceived as vicious by almost everyone.
I think that the essential characteristic of these people is the desire to punish. In this context, they are no different from environmentalists, who also know the implications of their work, but can't advertise this fact because they wouldn't get anywhere.
Imagine if they called themselves "Warriors for God: Subjecting Sinful Humans to God's Will". They'd be more honest, but they would be immediately rebuffed. Same for "Save the Whales". Same for "Universal Health Care." (This is not to say that I believe all their supporters know the implications.)

Diana, I truly admire what great efforts you, Paul, Ari Armstrong, Lin Zinser and all the others are making towards defeating these evils and creating a society that is more geared to real human life and happiness. The activities of all of you are great examples of genuine patriotism.

Skekfu, When I say the promoters of the personhood amendment are giving "zero" thought to the implications of what they're doing, I mean they don't give any thought to it because they only care about one thing: finding the most direct way to go after Roe v Wade and get it overturned on appeal, for that is what god wants. They do not care about anything else, and ignore all of the myriad detrimental implications. They are not the least bit concerned that many people would find their work evil, even though it is in fact evil by human-life standards.
I would not underestimate the sincerity of these evangelicals: they are very upfront about what their goals are and make no attempt to soft-pedal it. They want to create a society based on bibilical values, and they will not quit until that's accomplished. They are undeterred by what "non-believers"--and even other Christians who don't agree with their strategy--think of them. They claim, afterall, that "god is on their side."
