More Leftover Links -- And Some Fresh Treats
By Diana Hsieh @ 9:07 PM

I've got some links I've been meaning to post for a while, so I'd better get them up before the new year really gets going.

  • Robert Levy, the most insightful national security analyst around, wrote a good article on the troubling trends in civil liberties brought on by the Bush administration. Although the article is from mid-December, all the issues are still relevant.

  • Some in the blogosphere have already praised Stephen Hicks' article in TOC's Navigator on free speech and postmodernism, but I thought I ought to chime in. I enjoyed his two lectures on the subject at TOC's summer seminar. Those interested in more information on this subject ought to check out The Shadow University by Alan Kors and Harvey Silvergate, which I reviewed here.

  • In case you missed it, go check out Chris Sciabarra's article on Partisanship vs. Objectivity in Ayn Rand Scholarship. Speaking of partisanship, check out this monster of a biased review of Nathaniel Branden's memoir and Barbara Branden's biography of Ayn Rand.

  • A few weeks ago, Hanah Metchis pointed this interesting and long article on the complexities of spousal abuse.

  • In more recent fare, I am always gratified to learn yet another reason to love David Mamet. Gaining greater respect for the rationality of the dissident Iranian student movement isn't so bad either!

That's all for now, but I'm sure more will follow!

    More Links
By Diana Hsieh @ 2:16 AM

I've been running behind on adding links to various worthy people and organizations, so in addition to Mudita Journal (below), let me mention:

  • Objectivist-friendly Aristotelian Rod Long has a fun unblog titled In a Blog's Stead. Right now, the top unpost concerns what "Austro-Athenians" owe John Rawls. (The credo of "Austro-Athenians" is "The libertarians are right about economics and politics. The Greek philosophers are right about everything else." Delightful!) Rod also had an excellent post on dogmatism in Objectivism a few months ago that I hope to comment upon soon. (It's not a time sensitive issue, so it can wait a bit longer without going stale.)

  • Thanks to Arthur (who has some great new posts up), I've added a link to the active and vigorous Citizens for Voluntary Trade.

  • I recently found out about The Rattigan Society for gay and lesbian Objectivists. Questions abound: Must a person be gay or lesbian to subscribe? In other words, are bisexuals and transgenders unwelcome? (And yes, I do know two transgender Objectivists, although both would now qualify as lesbians now, I suppose.) And what about Objectivists just interested in issues related to sexuality, including homosexuality?

  • I've recently discovered (or perhaps rediscovered, I don't remember) the The Objective Daily American. Presently posted is an upbeat commentary for the new year on the rebellion against idiotic government regulations now institutionalized in our culture.

I'll have some more catch up articles to post later, but this is all for now!

    Mudita Journal
By Diana Hsieh @ 4:59 PM

Josh Zader has finally gotten himself a blog called Mudita Journal. The unusual name "mudita" is explained as meaning "sympathetic joy" or "happiness at another's good fortune" -- an important concept in Buddhism for which no English word exists. I love the concept for exactly the reason Josh cites, namely that "we are taught to pursue our dreams, but to resent those who achieve them." However, I must admit to philosophical quibbles with the term "fortune" in the definition, given its intimate connection to chance and luck rather than planning and effort. So a question for Josh: Does mudita primarily refer to success by chance or to success in general?
